Scottish celebrities
When I was little my mother read to me a poem by Stevenson called "Heather Ale", which led me to believe that Scots must be some kind of alcoholic and barbaric tribe who wouldn't hesitate to kill a boy to get a recipe for a drink. Later on, when my father told me that Scotsmen wear 'skirts' (since there is not a word for a kilt in Ukrainian) I started picturing them as alcoholic barbarians dancing the can-can around bonfire. Don't ask me why. I was just a little girl with an overactive imagination back then. As I became a teenager and saw "Highlander" and "Braveheart" I started wondering the same thing as every teenager girl does; what the hell do Scottish men wear under their kilts? Nowadays, I just wonder why more men don't wear skirts. One would think that the metrosexuals should've embraced it by now...
Sean Connery (left) and
Adrian Paul (right)

It would be a shame not to start this page by mentioning Sean Connery, who is probably the most famous Scottish actor of all time. I think it's very fortunate that Mr. Connery's hair turned white as he started aging. I rarely find older men attractive, however, I do find Sean Connery more attractive as an older man as opposed to when he played James Bond. Ironically enough young Sean Connery reminds me of Adrian Paul who played a Scotsman Duncan MacLeod in the series, "Highlander". |
Jay Leno (left) and Billy Connolly
(right)
I've always been a big fan of Jay Leno. I'm probably one of the very few people who actually read his autobiography. Although I can't claim that it was on purpose. One day at work I didn't have anything to read during my lunch break, so I picked up the first book that I found in my boss' office, which turned out to be (as you can probably guess) Leno's autobiography. In the book there was a picture of Leno as a young man. He had long hair and looked very much like Billy Connolly, which I think he still does. After all, apart from Leno and Connolly, there aren't that many men with such prominent chins. |

James McAvoy (left) and
Sean Penn (right)
|
James McAvoy ("The Last King of Scotland", "Penelope") reminds me of Sean Penn. I consider Mr. Penn a good actor, but I really don't understand him as a person. He reminds me of people like Walter Duranty, who praised Stalin while millions of my countrymen were dying of hunger. But I digress, I really liked James McAvoy in "Atonement", but was disturbed by his role in "Wanted". As a proud owner of rodents (chinchillas) I felt bad for the rats his character blew up in the movie. I know that it sounds silly, but I just can't help myself! |
Gerard Butler (left) and Heath Freeman (right)
| Poor Gerard Butler... I believe that he would've gotten an Oscar for his role in 300, if only king Leonidas didn't fail so miserably at diplomacy... It's just too bad that the Spartan king didn't have people like Tom Daschle and Nancy Pelosi to advice him on how free Greeks should deal with an invading Persian army. I bet if Leonidas would've met Xerxes without preconditions and resolved their cultural differences in a manner appropriate for civilized human beings Mr. Butler would've had a very erect golden dude on his mantle. |

Diane Sawyer (left) and Gerard Butler

I had a bit of trouble trying to figure out which celebrity (apart from Heath Freeman) Gerard Butler reminded me off. I knew that I've seen facial features similar to his before, but I just couldn't pinpoint which person they belonged to. The fact that Butler looks like three different men I’ve known in real life kept on confusing me. However, once I was able to get rid of my bias I realized that he resembles a famous TV anchorette Diane Sawyer! |
Alan Cumming (left) and Rob Morrow
(right)
| For a short while I thought that Alan Cumming and Rob Morrow were the same person. I do that quite often with actors I'm not very familiar with, because I seldom wear my glasses. When I saw "Maze" I couldn't get over Alan Cumming's brilliant performance. I thought how hard it must've been for Mr. Cumming to portray somebody with Tourette Syndrome in American accent... Of course, I wasn't any less impressed with the movie after I found out that Maze was played by Morrow. |

Mark Harmon (left) and Craig Ferguson

Late night TV host Craig Ferguson bears a very close resemblance to Mark Harmon from "NCIS". He bears an even closer resemblance to my godfather, but since the latter is not famous and probably wouldn't want to have his photo on the net I can't post their side-by-side photos on this page... |
Robert Carlyle (left) and David Petraeus
(right)
| Robert Carlyle, a wonderful Scottish actor who appeared in "28 Weeks Later" and "Once Upon a Time in the Midlands" looks like David Petraeus, the man responsible for turning around the war in Iraq. |
