"Born of flowers"

(oil painting on canvas, 16X20, 2000)

"Men are like a fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it's our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you'd like to have dinner with."
Kathleen Mifsud

"The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive."
Albert Einstein

"Men who don't understand women fall into two groups: Bachelors and Husbands."
Jacques Languirand

Originally this painting depicted a male model laying down. However, after I remembered one of my grandmother’s sayings, "A man could be laying down during the day under only two circumstances: when he's very sick or dead,” I took pity on my creation and turned him into a man of action. If you look at the painting it’s not exactly clear what he is doing, but I decided to consider this ambiguity a plus.

“Born of flowers” was painted over a really kitschy still life from the 1950’s. There are times when I ask myself if there is a chance of me accidentally covering some unknown work by Susan Rothenberg… which makes me also think that perhaps in the future some artist will paint over one of my paintings. I’m not trying to imply that the loss of one my artworks will be any kind of tragedy. It’s just that at times I wonder as to what will happen to my work after I’m gone. Would it be proudly displayed in somebody’s living room or would it be sold at a tag sale for a couple of bucks? The best part is never knowing the real answer.
